Monterey Bay
- Abundance of fish and wildlife and other natural resources
- 1542: Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo (Bay of Pines)

- 1818: expansion outwards after attempt to destroy Spanish control
- 1822: became a port for international trade, especially with Mexico

- 1950s: fishery collapsed from overfishing

- 1916: Knut Hovden opened his cannery on the current site of the Aquarium
- 1977: plans began to create a world-class aquarium
- 1978: Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation formed and total cost was donated in a one time personal gift from David and Lucile Packard
- October 20, 1984: opening day
- 1985: programs for school children begin
- 1986: aquarium gained movie-star status and awarded accreditation from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association1987: Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute founded
- 1994: Tuna Research and Conservation Center established
- 1996: Outer Bay opened its doors
- 1998: Sea Otter Program revitalized its mission
- 2000: Splash Zone exhibit opened
- 2004: white shark went on exhibit
- 2009: The Secret Lives of Seahorses opened temporarily
- 2014: special exhibition: Tentacles and celebrated 30 years
