· Located at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets
· Also called “The Haight” and “The Upper Haight”
· Known for being the origin of hippie counterculture
· Henry Haight à pioneer and exchange banker
· Munroe Ashbury à member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors
· Was first a collection of farms and sand dunes
· The Haight Cable Car Line was invented, which connected the Golden Gate Park with the Market Street Line
· Many amusement parks, popular entertainment destination
· Hit by the Depression
· WWII housing shortage à Victorians split into apartments
· Postwar Era - 19th century, multi-story, wooden houses, cheap rooms, vacant properties
· Bohemian subculture of the 1960s
