· The San Francisco cable car system is the world's last manually
operated cable car system
· It forms part of the intermodal urban
transport network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway
· There were 23 lines that were established
between 1873 and 1890. But only 3 of these are remaining
· Two of the routes are from downtown to
Fisherman's Wharf and the other one is along California Street
· Some commuters use the cars; but they are
mainly a tourist attraction
· In 1869 Andrew Smith Halide came up with the
idea for cable cars after seeing an accident with a horse-drawn streetcar
· The first
successful cable car was the Clay Street Hill Railroad in 1873
· Cable cars
declined after the first electrically operated streetcars came to San Francisco
· In 1979 the
cable cars became unsafe so they had to rebuild them for $60 million
· There is a
cable underneath the streets and the car rests on them with a set of pulleys
· It is
operated by an electric motor and the car starts and stops by "letting
go" of the cable
