Cable Cars

Information: Julia Gateman

Fun Facts
·  The San Francisco cable car system is the world's last manually operated cable car system
·  It forms part of the intermodal urban transport network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway
·  There were 23 lines that were established between 1873 and 1890. But only 3 of these are remaining
·  Two of the routes are from downtown to Fisherman's Wharf and the other one is along California Street
·  Some commuters use the cars; but they are mainly a tourist attraction
·  In 1869 Andrew Smith Halide came up with the idea for cable cars after seeing an accident with a horse-drawn streetcar
·  The first successful cable car was the Clay Street Hill Railroad in 1873
·  Cable cars declined after the first electrically operated streetcars came to San Francisco
·  In 1979 the cable cars became unsafe so they had to rebuild them for $60 million
·  There is a cable underneath the streets and the car rests on them with a set of pulleys
·  It is operated by an electric motor and the car starts and stops by "letting go" of the cable
